−Built through the 1970s and '80s as Rolex's answer to the quartz crisis rattling the whole watch industry, the Oysterquartz borrowed the Datejust name and dial layout but housed an entirely different movement inside, and a completely different case plus bracelet. Rolex only ever made it in small numbers before discontinuing the line, which is exactly why so few collectors ever get the chance to actually wear one. This Datejust Oysterquartz 17014A from 1991 carries a grey dial in its later, more refined form, with ten diamond hour markers set directly into the dial. Quartz movement means the accuracy here is near-absolute: no winding, no regulating, just correct time whenever you check it, which was the entire point of the technology Rolex was racing to compete with when this watch was designed. The integrated bracelet flows straight from the case with no visible break, a design choice that still looks more modern. What makes this one genuinely special is the rarity underneath the design. Most people who know Rolex only know the Oyster case, so this watch tends to surprise people who assume they've seen every Rolex shape there is.
